As a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer that protects the American people every day by preventing the entry of illegal persons, contraband and cargo through our international sea, air and land ports, while at the same time facilitating legitimate trade and travel, I want to thank you for supporting Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) retirement benefits for me and my fellow officers in the 2008 Omnibus spending bill (P.L. 110-161).
CBP Officers have been armed and performed law enforcement functions for over twenty years but have not received the same benefits as other federal LEOs. This prospective recognition will help to rectify this inequity and help to retain CBP Officers at their current jobs rather than transferring to other federal positions that have LEO benefits.
I was alarmed to learn that the Administration in its FY 2009 is asking Congress to repeal this hard-won and well-deserved LEO benefit that has been denied to us for so many years.
I ask you to continue to support CBP Officers and urge you to oppose this effort by the President to repeal this new law that finally recognizes our LEO status.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
